Whatever you do, a Teacup Shih Tzu is willing to be there with you. He’s up for anything and isn’t demanding. He’s not high strung, either, and can make a great companion for a senior. If you’re doing something mundane like cleaning the refrigerator, he will sit by and watch in solidarity. If you’re watching TV, he’ll watch too. If you’re up for play, the Teacup Shih Tzu is too. If you’re tired, he’ll take a snooze along with you.
More about this dog breed
Any dog, no matter how sweet or small, can develop obnoxious levels of barking, chewing, and other undesirable behaviors if he is bored, untrained, or unsupervised. Start training your puppy the day you bring him home. He is capable of soaking up everything you can teach him.
Never wait until he is 6 months old to begin training, or you will have a more headstrong dog to deal with. If possible, get him into puppy kindergarden class by the time he is 10 to 12 weeks old, and socialize, socialize, socialize.

Teacup Shih Tzu Breed Information
Teacup Shih Tzus are not a separate breed but rather smaller sized Shih Tzus that are bred to be smaller than the breed standard. While the American Kennel Club (AKC) does not officially recognize the “teacup” designation, these smaller dogs are popular among those seeking a petite companion. Here are the typical characteristics for teacup Shih Tzus:
Weight: Teacup Shih Tzus typically weigh between 3 to 7 pounds (1.36 to 3.17 kg), which is less than the standard Shih Tzu weight range of 9 to 16 pounds (4.08 to 7.26 kg).
Height: They usually stand about 6 to 8 inches (15.24 to 20.32 cm) tall at the shoulder. Standard Shih Tzus stand about 9 to 10.5 inches (22.86 to 26.67 cm) tall.
The Teacup Shih Tzu doesn’t care what you do as long as he’s doing it with you. Left with toys to play with, he can entertain himself and doesn’t mind if you work all day as long as you come home to him and give him some love.
Teacup Shih Tzus tend to like dogs and children. They enjoy play dates and can make great therapy dogs. Some like cats and some don’t; it seems to be entirely an individual preference rather than a breed trait.
He is playful and, on occasion, mischievous. He will steal your shoes. He may want you to chase him after he steals them. On the other hand, if he really wants them, he just might bury them. He’s not above taking toys from other dogs.
Grooming
Grooming a Teacup Shih Tzu requires hard work, but it’s important. Make sure to take care of your Teacup Shi Tzu’s coat and nails:
Coat Maintenance: Traditionally, Shih Tzus have long-haired coats that need to be brushed daily. This prevents tangles from forming and brushes away any dirt and debris that’s accumulated.
Nail Maintenance: Nail trimming is another essential. Keeping your Mini Shih Tzu’s nails under control will help it live a happy, healthy life. Short nails allow dogs of all breeds and sizes to walk comfortably without nail cracking or breaking. Nail damage can lead to various types of dog paw injuries that complicate their lives.
Exercise
The Teacup Shih Tzu is an energetic dog, but it’s not a particularly strong or enduring breed. That’s because, originally, it was bred to be a companion, not a record-breaker at dog shows. A regular walk or jog around the block will be enough to keep it in shape. We’re talking about a 20–30-minute stroll. Marathon runs, hikes, and other “extreme” activities aren’t a good choice for a Teacup Shih Tzu, though.
These pooches have short legs and won’t be able to keep up. Focus your attention on puzzle games, as these dogs need quite a lot of mental stimulation.
Health
Also known as the Imperial Shih Tzu, this diminutive dog is generally pretty healthy, but its small size does result in some unique issues and health requirements.
Inside the Teacup Shih Tzu’s body is a collection of tiny organs and fragile bones, all of which present certain challenges when it comes to keeping these dogs healthy. Their small stomachs “may not be able to digest solid foods properly because of their size,” potentially causing digestive problems as severe as malnutrition.
You may find you need to feed your little lion more frequently than a normal-sized dog as they are prone to hypoglycemia and because their small stomachs make it difficult to digest larger quantities.
Personality
Shih Tzu Teacup dogs are as playful as they are affectionate. They love curling up on their owners’ laps but are equally as satisfied when running around (though require less exercise than larger dogs). They’re the perfect family breed or well-suited as a companion for older people. As long as you’re close by, your Teacup pup will be happy!
Miniature Shih Tzu dogs are renowned for their happy and friendly temperaments. They get on well with people of all ages, other dogs, and even pets of different species. They’re as sweet as anything!
